There are plenty of adult Cocker Spaniels who have already proven themselves NOT to have negative characteristics. If you find such an adult, don't let "typical breed negatives" worry you.

American Cocker Spaniels are very clever and also very devoted dogs. They will perform best with energetic owners as they are very active and fond of playing. These energetic dogs are wonderful pets for the family, and should not be left alone for extended periods of time. Because of the long coats of these dogs, they find it difficult to stay cool in hot weather conditions.

When you acquire a puppy, you're acquiring potential -- what he one day will be. So "typical breed characteristics" are very important. But when you acquire an adult, you're acquiring what he already IS.
