Originally used in England to track deer and wild boar, it was specifically used to hunt the otter. The Airedale was used as a carrier during World War I. A good swimmer, the dog would travel for hours to reach its destination. Like other terriers, the Airedale can be difficult to handle. Owners need to use a firm hand during the training period.
Prone to: Umbilical hernia; brain defect
Spunky, protective, yet sweet, this breed is not recommended for the average family. Dominance issues can arise if proper training is not started at and early age. The Airedale Terrier can be somewhat stubborn so firm handling is best.
Airedales do fine around children when they have had sufficient training. Airedales are highly intelligent and if trained properly, will listen to every word their master commands. They are extremely loyal, patient, kind, loving and very gentle but won’t take any sort of abuse and will defend their territory. It is important to familiarize them with young children from birth and they will adopt the kids as their own and be very protective.
Young Airedale Terriers are especially rambunctious and can turn your garden into a moonscape of excavated moles and tulip bulbs.
Mental stimulation (hunting, fetching sticks, obedience, agility, playing games) is essential for this thinking breed.
