The Akita is the largest Japanese breed. It is was bred to be a guard dog, a hunter of bear, deer, wild boar, and to retrieve waterfowl from land or water. They are alert and courageous. The Akita but can make a great family pet but should have early socialization with children. Akitas don't favor other dogs and should be socialized with other dogs from puppy-hood. The Akita needs daily outdoor exercise.

The Akita male height is 26" (66 cm) or more and the females height is 24" (61 cm) or more. The Akita weight ranges from 75-110 lbs (34-50 kg). Akitas have a double coat with the undercoat being soft, dense and short and the outer guard coat is harsher being medium-length and straight. The coat may be any color, but usually range from black to brindle to pinto to white. Weekly brushing is required for grooming.
As with most dogs and people their is usually a health problem. The Akita health problems to be aware of gastric torsion (bloat) because of its deep chest.

The Akita is considered Japan's national dog. This breed was originally used for bear hunting in the Japanese islands. When not hunting, these dogs were used for fighting. Sport fighting is now outlawed in Japan. The breed is now used for police and guard duty. This is a very powerful dog, but it makes a loyal companion and prized house pet.
