The German Shepherd origin is Germany. The German Shepherd other names are Alsatian, Deutscher Schaferhund. German Shepherds dates have see to go back to as early as the 7th Century A.D. The roots of the German Shepherds are in the mountain sheepdog of Germany. Approx. 1880 the German army modified the German Shepherd breed to work as a military dog. In Hanover in 1882, the first German Shepherd exhibited.Credit for the formation of the modern breed is given to German fancier Rittmeister von Stephanitz.

German Shepherds have the height of males 24 - 26 inches. The German Shepherd females are 22 - 24 inches.  German Shepherd weights run between 75 - 95 lbs.  German Shepherd coats are medium, straight and hard close lying with a dense undercoat having colors of solid black, gray, tan, gold. White is recognized by the CKC. The German Shepherd Dogs are intelligent, responsive, solid temperament, consistent behavior. Shepherds loves their own children, but may be suspicious of other children. If German Shepherds are trained from puppyhood they accept other pets. They are a very good watchdog and a very good guard dog.
German Shepherds require daily brushing and bathing occasionally. Shepherds love long, daily walks. The German Shepherd needs a large open yard. As with all dogs obedience training will help improve their social skills. As far as learning rate, the German Shepherd has a very high obedience learning, obedience and problem solving capability. Training will not always be easy as they are very intelligent and will try to think of ways to avoid doing what you are asking. They are very active indoor and outdoor dogs. As with all dogs a fenced yard is essential. To own a German Shepherd you should be strong and confident as this always helps with training and obedience. The German Shepherd life span is 12-13 years while their German Shepherd litter size is 5-10 German Shepherd puppies.

German Shepherd health issues: Usually hardy. Has potential to have hip dysplasia (abnormal development of hip joints), skin disease, bloat, congenital heart disease, Von Willebrand's disease, nervous condition and panosteitis (an inflammation of long bones in the legs.)

They are very intelligent with quick learning capabilities, self-confidence and common sense. German Shepherds perform very well in sentry duty, tracking, obedience, herding, drug and bomb detection, police partners, rescue work, guide dogs, hearing dogs, and most of all as a great companion.
