My family and I live in a duplex and share the backyard with our neighbours. They have a dog who happens to poop just inside our back gate all the time. I would like to know what I can do to get her to quit doing her job in this spot. Our neighbours do not pick up behind their pet and my daughter and I use the backyard alot. I just want to put down something that won't harm the dog but will keep her from pooping inside our gate. Please help!!!

Please help my poor little pug. She has otitis media that can not be cured without surgery at the cost of $2,000. We watch her suffer from it day by day and it looks like it causes her to have such horrible pain in her ear. I am 9 years old, and I can't get a job to make the money to help her. We do not have enough money to pay for the surgery but she needs it badly. Without it, her ear can burst or cause her to be deaf. We are very upset over this and feel terribly bad for her as we watch her go through such bad pain. The stench is very bad also. She really needs your help!

Hello, My name is Danetta and I have a male Bischon Frise. He is a year old. He turned a year in January. I cannot get him to stop urinating in the house. I have tried everything from stain and odor removers, walking him six, seven times a day on long walks, putting him in a kennel within the house,weewee pads, rewarding him whenever he peed outside( which he does alot. He lifts that leg quite often outside and still comes in and pees inside). None of this worked.We just moved from our old house that had carpet he spotted and messed that up really badly. I thought that because he could detect his odor he would always spot, but now we are in our new house(which has hard wood floors, he is doing the same thing).

I adopted a 6 year old Lasha Apso 2 months ago. She has been constantly itching since I brought her home. After 2 weeks she had scratched a place on her back that got infected. So the vet gave her medicated shampoo, pill for the infection,and had me shave her down. Two weeks later she is no better except for the place on her back has healed. Now she is on Oatmeal baths and Lamb and Potato food and treats. I have tried to contact the lady that gave her to me, but she will not return my calls. The dog was use to sleeping with the old owner so she has been sleeping with me since I got her. HELP!!! I am getting no sleep at night and I work, so I am very tired every day. Any other owners out there that have had a hard time with itching. It has got to be some type of allergy. What have you done?????

I rescued a chocolate male lab this past weekend from a home that was not giving it what it needed. I took it to the vet today and was told that both ACL's in the back legs were torn and the dog would either need surgery or be put to sleep. The surgery is $1132.00 per leg and will need both hind legs done. I do not have this kind of money so I am looking to find if there is a charity out there that will help with the surgery. My 9 year old dog Snarfy has been diagnosed with Cushings Disease. It all started about 6 months ago when she started drinking more water than she normally did. Then in the last couple of months it increased to the point that she was going through about 5 gallons of water during the day and more during the night. Next came the accidents in the floor, we couldn't get mad at her, who wouldn't pee in the floor after that much water. This embarrassed her and she would go hide since she knew she wasn't supposed to do that in the floor(she was a well trained dog and never went in the house). We have to take her out every 15 minutes and go fill the water bowl again. I couldn't leave her as an outside dog since I had to shave her down to the skin because she was so hot and all she did was pant all the time. We went to the vet she did some blood work and said she had Cushings disease. This is where the dog has a tumor of the pituitary or adrenal glands. With medication she could live a normal and happy life for several years. She needs a chemotherapy drug called Lysodren and it is very expensive. We are talking about $8-$11 a pill $8 was the very cheapest I could find. I can't afford it having 3 kids at home, no insurance for them and being on medicine myself but I don't want to let my dog suffer. If anyone has any of this medication left from their own personal use or from having an animal that no longer needs it please consider a donation. Snarfy and our family would really appreciate it. We have two dogs, a bulldog and a mix breed and recently they both have been urinating and #2 in the house. Prior, they had both been house trained and were very good about it. They are out several times a day as well as going on walks. We are at ropes end as to what to do. I could have just let them out, and when I come in and walk to another room, one of them will mess on the floor. If we can't fix this, we may have to find them another home. . . . it is becoming unbearable. HELP

HELP!!!!!!!!!! My Scottish Terrior is having some kind of coat trouble. She had a spot where she scratched her hair off about the size of a half dollar. I treated it and watched as the hair grew back in. Now her coat seems to be getting very dull and she is losing hair from the base of the tail to the shoulder blades. It begins where her coat parts on the middle of her back and I am not sure if she is losing it or what??? It is all shorter there and almost a browninsh red color and feels dry. I have tried conditioners, moisturizers,and I changed her food thinkining it could be nutritional ( about a week ago) what else can I try? She does not have fleas so I know it's not that....don't know what else to do. Is this normal for a scotty or are they prone to anything? Thanks, Ali

My mixed breed terrier died 4 months ago and we have been researching the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier for our new housemate. I really think I should see and experience an adult Wheaten to see what they are like. I'm quite sure this is the breed for us but WHERE ON EARTH do you find one??? Does anyone have any hands on experience with the Wheatens who are not breeders? I get mixed comments about every question I ask the breeders who by the way want to charge from $700 - $2000 for a puppy. Is there any real difference in the temperment of males vs females? Are the males really easier to train and teach? Are the breeders on the internet to be trusted? I hope someone who has had a Wheaten for a while will give me some real insight about the breed....good and bad. Does anyone know of anyone in Las Vegas who has a Wheaten who might allow us to see him/her? We have a very sweet 2 yr old male white boxer with birth defects ( jaw out of alignment so tongue hangs out, one shorter foreleg). Otherwise he is healthy and happy. Wedding and births have brought me to Texas this summer(ugh)and my 11 month old long haired chihuahua, Rigel. He had a thick coat as he loved being out in the snow all winter. Got to Texas a month ago and all dogs have fleas here. And the heat is overwelming. His skin is flushed hot pink, and the fleas just won't stop. I do not use chemicals in my home, on me, or my dog. I have put him in deep water for twenty minutes several times trying to drown the fleas. Used essential oils recommended and purchased at good pet shops in Austin. Any suggestions?

I just lost my minature snauzer a couple of days to an autoimmune disease. I put out all kinds of money to save him. No blood test had been done by my vet when he had surgery last Ocotber. Hi- my miniature pinscher puppy woke me up screaming last night when he fell off the bed. I took him to the vet this morning and had him X-rayed. I found out he has a compound fracture of both bones in his left foreleg, and it's going to take surgery. He's extremely active, even with the splint on, and I'm afraid he's going to injure himself even worse if I don't get the surgery soon (they want me to bring him back in on Monday). I'm a student at Berkeley working a part-time job paying minimum wage, and I simply can't afford the $3000 the vet wants to properly piece his leg back together. This guy is supposed to be one of the best for this surgery, but it's just way too much money! I tried a couple other vets in the area, and this seems to be the going rate. Does anyone know of a good orthopedic surgeon in the Bay Area- or even in Southern California, I'm originally from there but the drive this weekend isn't going to be pretty- or (and I really do hate to ask this) a quick way to get the money I need? Please help, my baby's really in pain!

I am having a terrible time with sick puppies. Three-four months ago I noticed that my puppies about 4-6 weeks of age began having drainage and coughing, even though I have followed the worming and kennel cough vaccinations carefully. It appears to be a different strand of distemper or something, I have no idea. I have given batril, penicillian, dimetapp. The puppies symptoms include severe drainage, coughing, throwing up, and loose, white stool. First mistake is to paper train a pup to do its business ( we say nannies) in the house. A pup will defecate/pee after eating , after sleeping. BUT it will NOT , as a rule, soil the area it sleeps in. It is very wrong to rub nose in poop of a puppy, it is like spanking a baby for soiling a diaper. A pup does not begin to attain control until about four months old. Some are earlier, some are later. So...take your puppy, after it eats or wakes, to the spot where you want it to do its business. Give it a name, like do your nannies, when the pup produces , praise it, love it up, even give it a treat. At night, no water after six oclock, you can pen the pup, I never did, I tie the pup to my bed post and its bed is at the foot of my bed, when I do this I also give the pup a high value treat so they will not think it is a punishment. If the pup is taken out around ten at night, and again first thing in the morning, every time it finishes eating, ( like a baby , multiple feedings during day) after it wakes from a nap, puppies sleep often..high.praise and treats for doing its stuff in proper location, restraining at night, NOT punishing for mistakes, you should have a no problem training going on . Puppies will have accidents as they learn, just as children do. And they want to please their owners, this is a valuable thing, the pups desire to please. If the pup messes in the house first thing, take the fecal matter to the spot you want pup to use, if they smell their own poop there, it will soon be appointed the proper place to do this. I have seldom had any extended housebreaking using this method of training. Now, this is NOT nice, but it is one way to cure a nasty dog. Again , take some fecal matter to a spot outside that is where you want the dog to do its thing. Next time the dog poops in the house, take some of that poop, put it in the dogs mouth, hold the mouth shut, useing a low, growling type of voice, tell the dog it has done a BADDDD thing..take the dog, holding the mouth shut with the poop in it, to the spot outside where it should go, I have never had to do this more than three times to a dog to cure it of messing in the house. Disgusting it is, but not as disgusting as a nasty dog pooping all over the house. Hope this helps some of you.

I have 2 German Sheperds, litter mates, One male, one female. They are 7 years old and up to this point have been best of friends and always together. Our female, Picard, has always been the dominent of the two, until now. We have noticed that when left alone our male, Riker has been very aggresive toward his sister, biting her face and leaving open wounds. I have not been able to find answers on the net about aggresive dogs and other house pets, a lot about aggresive dogs and people. Our male is not fixed, our female is. Have you heard about litter mates fighting like this as they get older? Is there anything that I can do to lessen the attacks on my female G.S? I have several dogs that stay inside the home with me and during the course of the day I let them out to do their business. The problem is that on Monday, when I brought them back in, my 5 yr old Bichon was drooling heavily and trying to hide from me. My first thought was that he had bitten a frog. I rinsed his mouth and immediately took him to the Vet. They agreed with my theory and kept him overnight. He developed a twitch on his lip that the doctors said was myclonic and common with frog bites. Unfortunately, it is now Thursday and he is still in the hospital. The frog bite toxin should have run it's course already. His first blood test was normal, except for low phosphorus levels, which have been corrected by giving him some milk. The second blood test showed all normal. Since tuesday night the twitch on his upper lip and drooling has slowed down to about 2 episodes a day,lasting about 1 to 5 minutes. They have taken xrays and sedated him to look down his throat. He seems to respond to valium, but phenobarbitol makes him sick. He has been awake and alert during all his ordeals, with no stiffness in any other extremities. No fever, lungs are clear, although he starts to pant right before an episode. The diagnosises, so far, are the following: frog bite (now eliminated), distemper (now eliminated), poisonous plant (now eliminated) and seizure activity (epilepsy). I don't want to keep him on valium, since it causes more liver dysfunction than phenobarbital, but I will if I have to. PLEASE ANY assistance or information that you may have will be SO greatly appreciated. The doctors say they have never seen this before, because so little of it is related to epilepsy. I want to save my baby, please help! Thank you in advance.

dogs usually go into their first heat between 8 and 10 months. Breeding should not be done at this time! They will go into heat about every 6 months so if you are looking to breed your dog you are looking at about 14-16 months on average. I would look up more info that is breed specific if you are seriously looking into breeding. Also ask your vet if there are any issues that your dog might have as far as being able to deliver on her own or if she may need a cesarian section. There is alot more to breeding that just getting two dogs together. Hope I answered your question. (and maybe a couple you didn't ask) ;-)

Hello I was just surfing the web and found this site hopefully someone can help with a little info. I own an 7mnth. old French Bulldog, At about 6 mnths i noticed his skin of his underbelly and inner thighs Becoming a little sparse of hair and his skin was turning pinkish and began to have pustules. To make this short, I brought him to my Vet and he said it looked like allergies. So i changed his food Diet to a hypo allergenic? food. He had what appeared to be small zits like acne all over his undersides,And his paws were red and raw looking, with some hair loss on them also. I removed all types of treats from him. Just his food and water.2 weeks went by and nothing changed So my Vet put him on Keflex antibiotic.At this point there was significant hair loss on chest,inner thighs,paws,and a little on his forehead.The antibiotic dried all the acne up on him within 2 days,but the redness and bald patches are still there.Week 3 Had allergy testing done and he didnt seem to be allergic to much.But there were a few items on list which he tested positive to (rice ,pork,barley,etc) But i still have him on same food.Ok ...Ok sorry. Been about 4 or 5 weeks and other than the acne his red raw look is still there and the small bald patches are also. Having a biopsy? done in 3 weeks Vet said it might be Pemphigus? I looked it up online and Oh my God that's not good. Only thing is, Pemphigus i read has a tendency to effect lips, mouth,ears,and anus. None of which are effected on my pup. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and sorry soo long. Thank you Doug

I was recently traveling abroad and saw a dog that I would like but didn't recognize. A language barrier kept me from asking it's owner. I am trying to identify the breed so that I can find one. It stood about 16-20inches tall had medium length hair and droopy ears. It was a slender dog but the most distinctive thing about it was it's coloring. It was almost like a maroon gray, much darker than a Weimeraner and of course longer hair. The dog seemed to have a tender mellow disposition. I have a 6 mo old Bischo Frese who is really bright. Problem is she won't housetrain. I've done reasearch (after I purchased her!) on this and it seems to be a problem with the breed. Also, everyone I've spoken to (including a conversation with the breeder after the fact) said it takes a long time to house train them. Siri is so bright, but when it comes to messing (I call her poopy instead of puppy) she just doesn't make the connection. Can someone tell me exactly what is going on with this breed. How can they be so bright, but so stupid when it comes to housetraining. Siri can puck up anything really quickly, but when it means pooping - lights out/no one home. Please, someone out there, what is wrong with this breed? What is the genetic reason for this?

We purchased a Bischon a month ago from our local pet store, she is now 4 months old. Our vet examined her and said she was very healthy. However we are having a terrible time housebreaking her. We tried to crate train her but she pees and poops in the crate. She often pees when she is playing and even when she is being held. She even pooped once when my daughter was holding her. When we take her outside she rarely goes but when she does we praise her and reward her with a treat. The next time we take her out she doesn't seem to remember what to do even when we take her to the spot she last went. She has been easy to train as far as mealtimes and other "no no's". I wondered if this is a problem with this breed or if there are medications to help with this. I would appreciate any suggestions. Kristi

We have a 2yr old {rescue} Akita. We owned an Akita for 13 years. She died last November. So, we have experience with the breed. My grandchildren are visiting for a few days in about a month. I am extremely careful with my dog around children, and use every common sense rule. However, I just read an article on-line that said rescue dogs should NEVER be around children! My dog is already going to a trainer for basic command reinforcement , and he has a very gentle and friendly manner. The article I read has made me feel worried about the impending visit. Can anyone comment if it is true that rescue dogs are always dangerous around children?

i have a wheaton puppy (3 1/2 months old) who is very nippy no matter what I have available for him to chew. what type of correction works best for wheatons? i have tried holding his nose, laying him on his side and staring him down, growling and so on. he seems to get more aggresive with these actions. should he just go through this phase with gentle reminders and constantly sticking chew toys in his mouth? what type of chew toys work best? i am obviously confused with which method to use. i have a large family and the last thing i want in my house is an aggresive dog. thank you.

My 4-year old bischon has allergies to 35 different things indoors & out. He has been getting shots for over a year now, and the vet wants to add to them? He stills licks his feet all the time and, his eyes are draining, and his nose turned pink??? ( maybe from licking it all the time from the drainage?) He is on special d/d duck & rice food with no treats. I don't know what to do , continue the shots- or try something different.!!!!He is allergic to some grasses ,weeds. trees,fungi, epidermals,house dust, mites, foods, and staph. I have talked to other bichon owners who say their dogs have no allergies at all. Our dog is so sweet I need to help hime get better.

I have a Wheaten Terrior that I purchased from a reputable breeder. She is the sweetest most wonderful dog, but she will not stop peeing in the house. She is 14 months old. We have had her for about 8 or 9 months. We recently about one month ago, installed new carpets in our home because of the smell from our previous dog that peed on the rugs because of old age and illness. So we now confine her to the kitchen/family room 100% of the time. This is a tiled area. She pretty much pees in the same spot amost every day. She is alone during the day for about 8 hours. She sleeps alone at night in the family room. We originally tried cage training, but she would pee in the cage and didn't seem to be bothered by it. We then began to use pee pads and she did pee on them until recently. Now she will pee next to them on the floor. I have even seen her pee on the patio instead of walking 15 more feet to the grass. I am close to the end of my rope. Any suggestions on how to salvage this dog would be very much appreciated. Larry

Well not Actually ON FIRE, but the area of his head where his brain is very hot to the touch. Being a paramedic myself thought at first that he may not be feeling good when this happens, but, there is no change in his actions or activity. One minute his head will be regular temp. and the next will be so hot you just about can't touch it, and then after a while will be cool again. I gave him a baby aspirin and it doesn't make any difference. There is also no rhyme or reason to the time of day or his activity levels. Just wondering if some one can shed some light on this. My guess is an infection of some sort. Thanks in advance.
