The Germans developed this breed in the late 1800's. Today, it is one of the world's most popular breeds. Originally used as a herding dog, it became famous during the World Wars as a guard and police dog. Being a strong and intelligent breed, the German Shepherd can do it all. When properly bred it makes a good companion dog, watch-dog, guide dog for the physically impaired, and playmate for children.
