This large dog was developed and used in southern Germany as a cattle herding helper. When the railroad came to the countryside, this dog was moved into the towns. Often these dogs were found in the taverns and butcher shops as guarddogs during the 19th century.These are handsome dogs often used as watch dogs. The Giant Schnauzer has done well in the showring.
