Extra Notes About Missing, Lost or Stolen Dogs

Missing, Lost or Stolen Dogs
A note for owners with missing dogs.

We know you or someone in your family is loosing sleep. Always walk your neighbor-hood immediately. Even take the neighbor's dog out for a walk when you should be asleep. Possibly someone might have your dog out late a night for a run that lives close by. Listen for your dog's bark. Chat it up with kids to see if they have seen a dog fitting your description or anyone walking or running with a dog lately. Sometimes young kids seeing your flyer stapled to a post,  might have seen something but would be too young or scared to make a phone call, if they saw an older teenager or adult with your dog. Make sure the posters have high contrast background color to stand out, with a clear picture. Get the posters/flyers up fast by getting friends to help you. Get a similar picture off the internet if you don't have a clear picture. Post flyers at gas stations, grocery stores, strip malls, etc. Call the local radio station that nobody listens too, except old people in your neighbor-hood that watch everything that happens on your block. Call the newspaper to see if anyone has asked for prices for advertising found dogs and leave your phone number with the clerk and get the clerks name. It's possible to have an inserted flyer in your local pennysaver weekly newspaper. At a cheaper cost, ask some local neighbor-hood children to distribute flyers in the surrounding area for a small fee. Visit and phone all local vets. Someone might be visiting them or asking questions about a dogs health or care. Visit or phone dog groomers, dog clubs, pet stores, variety stores, etc. Call the park's official who maintains the parks for your city. Often dogs are assumed to be abandoned and not necessarily lost. They could of been picked up by someone who commutes back and forth to work traveling 60-100 miles/day. Sometimes dogs are picked up by local government workers such as police, street crews, etc. They then would be re-located to a metropolitan or regional shelter or humane society facility. Notify all dog shelters in your region and just outside your region, that your dog is missing. Fax or e-mail pictures to the shelter. Post info. on the internet using searches in excite.com, nothernlight.com, etc. using keywords "lost dog". Check the dogs favorite places such as the lake, pool, dumpsters with food, picnics, reunions, playgrounds, organized events or attractions, etc. Ask restaurant and food businesses nearby if they have seen your dog hanging around their parking lots. Where ever that food smell is, your dog might travel to.

A Success Story:
Geton.net has heard stories of one person owning 1 red Doberman and stealing another red Doberman. The owner with the lost dog went for walks everyday and night faithfully. Approx. a week later there was 2 red Dobermans in the persons back yard only 3-4 blocks away. Everytime she walked passed that house the previous nights there was only 1 Doberman. They didn't call out for their dog or jump the 6 foot wooden privacy fence to get their dog, THEY CALLED THE POLICE.

Another Success Story:
A personal friend of mine had to move from her rented house she had for about 10 years. She owned a German Shepherd. She could not find another house quick enough. She knew a Vet up in the St. Jacobs area in Ontario that said they would take the dog to see if they would like it for a week.
When my friend called for the 2nd time that week they said the dog ran away. Apparently, the vet left the door open figuring the dog would not run. What an idiot. He got more than just being called a few names, she notified all vets in the area, associations for vets, and then called her lawyer and filed a law suit. Even then, the dog had been missing for 2 days and he did not call our friend to notify her. He figured she didn't want the dog anyway.
My friend took 3 days off work and spent $150 on gas for a dog she was forced to give away. She put of posting, call radio station, ads in newspapers, stores, other vet offices, etc. Two weeks had passed by. She went door knocking out in the country areas on her days off.  A Mennonite farmer without radio, newspapers, hydro, etc. was keeping her dog safe having the German Shepherd guarding the chickens from predators. The farmer accepted no money as he said the dog "Earned his keep." for those days. SHE FOUND HER DOG!

A note for dog owners where someone found their dog:
Most people who have found a dog had to feed and care for the dog for days, weeks or months. Some even develop a special place in their heart for the dog. Some will take a reward and others will not. I would hope their owners would insist on paying for the bags of pet food, vitamins or give them a surprise gift at X-mas time. Perhaps they never owned a dog before and will be thinking of purchasing one. You could help them find a good breeder and a dog to suit their family. Those are Geton.net's feelings and suggestions, others might have their own ideas.
