The Newfoundland was used to work with fishermen bringing in the nets. Often they would swim to pull a drowning victim to shore. They love water and love to serve people. A massive dog, its gentle nature and love of children make it an ideal watch-dog. When asked, all owners of the Newfoundland talk of their unwavering loyalty. Because of their size, puppies should be screened for parents with good hip conformation.
