Sheep farmers from the English West Country in the 19th century developed this breed. The nick name for this dog is "Bobtail" because of the practice of tail docking the puppies. This was done to identify the breed as a working dog used to drive livestock to market. Today the breed is a companion dog with guard dog instincts. An extremely affectionate dog, it loves to play with children.
